OVERVIEW: Pyrite

 · Pyrite is a mineral, also known as Iron Sulfide or more commonly as Fools Gold for it''s looking similar to gold specs in rock form. By itself it is not really a problem, but when you combine some very special conditions it can become a problem. It is often accompanied by Aciddithiobacillus bacteria that can lie dormant for years.

The metamorphism of pyrite and pyritic ores: an overview | …

Pyrite, the most widespread and abundant of sulphide minerals in the Earth''s surficial rocks, commonly constitutes the primary opaque phase in ore deposits. Consequently, an understanding of the behaviour of pyrite and its relationships with coexisting phases during the metamorphism of pyritebearing rocks is vital to the interpretation of their genesis and post-depositional history.

Pyrite

Pyrite forms in most Earth surface environments, as it has an extensive stability over pH = 2–10. Pyrite has stability even in more oxic environments, above the boundary between oxic and anoxic (or suboxic) systems, which is usually taken to be where { SO 4 2 − } = { S ( - II) } ( Rickard, 2012).

Pyrite

Pyrite (FeS 2) and other iron sulfides are often present in significant quantities in many sedimentary deposits, including those associated with coal and commercially important metal ores. When sedimentary deposits containing large quantities of sulfide minerals are exposed to air and water, they rapidly oxidize to produce iron and other metals, sulfate, and acid.
